JUNE 17 – 29, 2014  Georgian Chant Tour

This is the 9th tour that John Graham has organized to Georgian monasteries to experience their rare beauty.  Graham fell in love with Georgian chant while at Princeton University and earned a PhD in musicology.  He also fell in love with Georgia and now has a Georgian wife, a home in Georgia and conducts intimate tours of the country, far off the beaten path.

Graham accompanies each tour, introducing the pilgrims to the food, the vistas, the sound and smell of this ancient country. Georgia was Christianized in the 3rd century by Nina and developed its own unique sound in chant which was not notated until the late 1800’s. Much of this work has been lost because of wars, but some has been recovered in Istanbul and Iraq.  It is hoped that there is some in Iran and perhaps when the political climate changes, scholars like Graham, will have access to it once again.
